What is changing

Landlords within scope keep digital records using compatible software and send quarterly updates to HMRC, followed by a final declaration after the tax year.

Making Tax Digital does not remove the Self Assessment requirement. Landlords affected will still need to file a Self Assessment return.

Who is affected

Whether you are affected depends on your qualifying income from property and self-employment, measured against thresholds and start dates set by HMRC.

Preparing early

Practical steps include:

  • Confirming whether you are within scope
  • Choosing suitable software
  • Setting up a simple routine for recording income and expenses
